A Desert Runs Through It
The Namib is the world’s oldest desert at more than 80 million years. Stretching hundred of miles from South Africa to Angola, the Namib is the only desert in Africa inhabited by elephant, rhino, giraffe and lion. Possibly the most photographed dune on earth is seen in Namibia. Located in the Sossusvlei part of the Namib, the salt and clay pans boast the world’s highest red sand dunes. The Kalahari Desert is also a must-visit. Home to the few remaining hunter-gatherers of southern Africa, the San bushmen still live as their ancestors by hunting with their bows and arrows, and gathering berries, insects and nuts for their food source. The biggest attraction, though, is the silence, solitude and the night sky with its world-class stargazing.
WIldlife in all its Glory
Namibia isn’t considered a “big five” safari destination, but with 80 big species of mammal, more than 600 species of birds and 24 species of reptiles, you are guaranteed rewarding wildlife viewing. Etosha National Park in the south is dominated by an immense salt pan edged by waterholes and is one of Africa’s best game reserves. Here you will see elephants, giraffes, blue wildebeests, hyenas, zebras and damara dik-diks (a small antelope). The Desert Rhino Camp houses unique desert-adapted elephants, lions and of course rhinos. On the coast, you can expect to see dolphins, seal colonies and migrating southern right whales
Unparalled Explorer Fun
A game drive may be thrilling enough for some, but there are other endless ways to experience heart-racing adventure, be it sandboarding a dune or sky diving above the desert. Second only to the Grand Canyon in size, Fish River Canyon is the place to hike. At Serra Cafema Camp, you can race quad bikes through the labyrinth of desert dunes. Despite the misconception that Namibia is all desert, water sports like kayaking and canoeing are also popular activities. Join seals and dolphins for a paddle at the tip of the remote Pelican Point peninsula. You can always opt for a calmer adventure—take to the skies on a sunrise hot air balloon ride or a light aircraft flight for a birds-eye view of the haunting landscape of the Skeleton Coast.
