Most people will agree that summer is the best time to travel. Sunny weather, long days… and throngs of people. If you’re anything like me, the idea of crowds plus inflated prices are a total nightmare. But, hold up! You can experience it all without elbowing everyone and their mother. Have you ever considered off-season travel?
In some ways, off-season travel is akin to hitting the jackpot. Not only will you avoid the crowds and not pay an arm and a leg, you’ll also get to experience a destination in a totally new light.
Take my recent trip to Croatia in October. Dubrovnik is usually packed with tourists, but I was able to wander the walls as if it was my own personal castle. And the crystal clear Mediterranean Sea? My own private swimming hole.
Iceland in April? Yes, it was chilly, but the country felt like it was all mine to explore. And I was fortunate enough to discover secluded hot springs where I could unwind after a day filled with adventure.
Even Rome in January, with the possibility of a little rain and chill, is worth it when you get to see all the historical sites without having to elbow your way through the crowds.
Whether you’re dreaming of a chill beach getaway or the cultural trip of a lifetime, there are so many amazing places that are even better to visit during off-season.
We’ve rounded up the top destinations that are perfect for off-season travel. And the best part? Each destination has its own unique charm during off-season, so you’re in for a real treat!
1. The Caribbean
Caribbean destinations such as Aruba, The Bahamas and Jamaica are popular during the winter, yet off-season travel from mid-April to mid-December is a great time to visit. The weather is still warm and sunny and you’ll have the beaches, watersports and activities mostly to yourself.
2. Costa Rica
Visiting Costa Rica during the off-season, also known as the green season, runs from May to mid-December and offers a unique and authentic experience. The country experiences an abundance of precipitation during this period resulting in lush greenery, wildflowers and an active wildlife.
The lower tourist numbers during this season make it easier to access popular destinations, and the lower prices of accommodation and activities make it an affordable option for wellness travelers. Plus, off-season is a perfect time to attend a yoga retreat or surf to your heart’s content!
3. Greece
Exploring Greece during off-season travel season presents the perfect opportunity to discover its rich history through ancient ruins, marvel at the beauty of its picturesque islands and indulge in its delectable cuisine—all while enjoying the benefits of fewer crowds and affordable prices. This ideal travel period typically falls between November and March.
4. Italy
During off-season travel, the picturesque canals and alleyways of Italy are hushed, providing an opportunity to fully appreciate the breathtaking architecture and art without the craziness of crowds.
The best time to experience this serene atmosphere is typically between November and March. It’s a joy to wander the ancient ruins of Rome, such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum without all the crowds.
Also be sure to visit the art and architecture of Florence— the famous Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery and the Duomo—with plenty of breathing room.
5. Mexico
Mexico is known for its beautiful beaches and warm weather, but it’s also a great place to visit during off-season. The rainy season runs from May to October, but the rain is usually short-lived, meaning you can enjoy the beaches, clear waters and fewer crowds. Take a food tour, visit ancient ruins, go snorkeling or diving, or escape to the spa at one of the many beautiful and luxurious Mexican spa resorts.
6. Thailand
Thailand’s off-season travel, which coincides with the rainy season, offers a chance to delve into the country’s rich culture, visit its renowned temples and marvel at its natural splendor while enjoying lower prices.
This period, which typically falls between June and October, provides a unique opportunity to experience a different side of the country and witness the monsoon rains that are typical of Southeast Asia.
7. United States
Traveling to America’s West Coast destinations during the off-season can be a great way to experience the region without the crowds and high prices. California and Arizona offer milder temperatures in early fall, making it a great time to explore the outdoors.
This can be a perfect opportunity for wellness travelers to enjoy the region’s natural beauty such as hiking in the mountains, visiting the beaches and exploring the national parks.
