Snapshot

  • Spa staycations are spa-focused getaways close to home, giving you the reset of a wellness trip without the travel.
  • Staycation near Chicago at The Langham for hot-and-cold hydrotherapy or Piva Beer Spa for its hops-filled soaking tubs.
  • Reset near New York or Boston at Manhattan's Equinox Hotel, built around fitness and sleep, or Mirbeau in Plymouth, where the outdoor whirlpool stays open all winter.
  • Drive to the water from Miami to Isla Bella in the Florida Keys or from the Bay Area to Farmhouse Inn in California wine country for seasonal spa treatments.
  • Head underground in Dallas to The Joule, where a crystal steam room and an ice fountain sit two floors below the lobby.
  • Book a program near Tucson at Canyon Ranch, where meals, movement and treatments arrive as one all-inclusive plan.

The best spa weekend of your year might be an hour from your front door. Book a room, add a treatment or two, and a spa staycation becomes your whole vacation.

Most people never think to look close to home for a spa vacation. But somewhere within an hour or two of your front door, there’s probably one good enough to build a weekend around.

And plenty of wellness travelers have already caught on. A growing number of Americans now plan spa-focused trips near home rather than far from it.

The trade-off works in your favor. A spa staycation gives you room to step out of your routine and rest. Doing so delivers many of the same benefits as a wellness retreat, minus all the stress of traveling.

Eight Spa Staycations Near You

Turns out, the spa vacation you keep postponing is closer than you think. Some of the hotels below are smack dab downtown. Others take a short drive, yet close enough that you leave after breakfast and check in before lunch.

1. Equinox Hotel – Manhattan, New York

Most hotels give you a base for seeing the city. Equinox Hotel gives you a reason to skip it. The brand’s largest fitness club is downstairs, the spa a few floors up, and cryotherapy and an infrared sauna lead the treatment menu.

Guest rooms stay dark and cool, and the hotel offers a sleep program to match. For a staycation, the appeal is simple. You go a few subway stops from home and come back reset.

– Serves New York City. In Hudson Yards, on the subway.

2. Mirbeau Inn & Spa Plymouth – Plymouth, Massachusetts

Mirbeau takes its cues from Monet. The name translates loosely as “reflected beauty,” and the gardens and guest rooms follow the Impressionist palette in soft, warm color.

Days here have no agenda. There’s a fireside relaxation room, a heated foot pool and quiet corners for reading or doing nothing. Treatments are the familiar ones, done slowly.

Pack a swimsuit. The outdoor whirlpool stays open through New England winters, and soaking outdoors in February is the reason to staycation in February.

– Serves Boston. Roughly 45 minutes south.

3. Isla Bella Beach Resort – Marathon, Florida

The drive is half the appeal. Once you clear Key Largo, water opens up on both sides of the Overseas Highway. Isla Bella Beach Resort is in Marathon, about halfway to Key West.

The spa is full-service, and covers hot stone massage, body wraps, facials and a Thai massage with singing bowls. Treatment rooms are close enough to the water that you hear it. Between appointments there’s the beach and the pools.

A group weekend works here, and so does a solo few days. There’s enough room that nobody’s plans crowd anyone else’s.

– Serves Miami. Roughly two and a half hours south. An hour from Key West.

4. The Langham – Chicago, Illinois

The Langham, Chicago would rather you take the long way through its spa. Start in the water, moving between hot and cold in sequence, before any treatment begins. The idea comes from traditional Chinese practice, where the temperature change is the point.

Dry heat comes next. There’s an herbal sauna, a Himalayan salt stone sauna, a steam room and heated loungers. An indoor pool is long enough for laps, and there’s a hydro-vitality jacuzzi.

– Serves Chicago. Downtown, on the river.

5. Piva Beer Spa – Chicago, Illinois

Piva Beer Spa is the outlier on this list, and worth including anyway. People have bathed in beer for centuries, and Piva runs Chicago’s only version. Wooden tubs come filled with hot water, hops, barley and brewer’s yeast.

There’s also a salt room, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and a relaxation room with hay-filled beds. Massages go from Swedish to hot stone. Piva has no guest rooms, so book a downtown hotel and give the spa your afternoon.

– Serves Chicago. Noble Square, Blue Line to Division.

6. The Joule – Dallas, Texas

The Joule hides its spa underground, two floors below the lobby. There’s a crystal steam room and a sauna, plus a vitality pool fitted with air massage loungers. An ice fountain in the middle handles the cooling-down part.

Lounges between the treatment rooms give you somewhere to be that isn’t your room. Solo staycations work here. So do groups of three or four, since there’s enough space that you’re not waiting for a lounger.

– Serves Dallas. Downtown, on Main Street.

7. Canyon Ranch Tucson – Tucson, Arizona

Canyon Ranch Tucson operates on a different model from everything else here. Rather than booking a treatment against a room rate, you join a program, and the program shapes the whole stay. Meals, movement and treatments arrive as one plan.

The signature canyon stone massage goes after tired muscles. Watsu takes place in warm water, with a practitioner holding your weight while you float. Ayurvedic treatments and energy work fill out the rest. Then there’s the desert, with the Santa Catalina foothills just north and dry air that makes early mornings pleasant.

– Serves Tucson locally. Roughly two hours from Phoenix.

8. Farmhouse Inn – Forestville, California

Farmhouse Inn put its spa in a barn. Treatments change with the season, so February and September give you different menus. Forest bathing happens on the land around the inn. The practice asks little of you beyond walking slowly and paying attention. Sound therapy sessions come after, when you’re already slowed down.

This is wine country, so plan accordingly. Sommelier-led tours leave from the inn, and guest rooms have wine refrigerators.

– Serves San Francisco and the Bay Area. Roughly 75 minutes north.
