Lucia Magnani Health Clinic: Mud Baths & Angels in the Hills of Romagna

Last updated October 28, 2024

Lucia Magnani Health Clinic and the Long Life Formula: Inside the health & well-being program that reveals the secrets of anti-aging through preventative medicine and holistic treatments to promote long-lasting wellness. The result? Guests leave feeling balanced from head to toe.

There are spas that simply skim the surface, and then there are spas that turn your world upside down—in the best way possible. At the heart of this transformation is Lucia Magnani Health Clinic, where every treatment and therapy is designed to rejuvenate not just your body, but your entire outlook on life for years to come.

Ancient Wellness Wisdom

The concept of a spa is far from new, with roots tracing back to ancient civilizations. Among the most influential were the Romans, who were instrumental in shaping what we now know as the modern spa experience.

While many ancient cultures revered water for its healing properties, the Romans took this one step further. In fact, they created expansive public and private baths that blended wellness, socialization and luxury.

Known as “thermae,” these baths were more than just a place to wash. They were vital centers for health, offering areas for relaxation, exercise and medical treatment. The very word “spa” comes from the Roman phrase “sanus per aquam,” meaning “health through water.”

Roman baths weren’t just about physical cleansing. They were hubs of daily life embodying the Roman belief that regular bathing was essential to a healthy lifestyle.

Although spas declined after the fall of the Roman Empire, their influence endured. However, the revival of spa culture during the Renaissance marked a shift toward specialized treatments for health conditions.

During my four-day stay, I witnessed the resurgence of the Roman philosophy that wellness encompasses both body and mind. Lucia Magnani Health Clinic continues to evolve, keeping this ancient wisdom at its core.

My Wellness Playground

Full disclosure. I have been to many a spa. But I have never been to a medical spa clinic. One where guests are treated to a 360-degree mind and body tune-up, layering physical exams, fitness activities, mindful eating, detox and spiritual inspiration on top of a traditional spa experience (thermal waters, sauna, steam room, sensory showers, and massage and treatment rooms).

So, of course, I was nervous. Honestly, I was more than a little nervous. Would I be bored? Did I pack the right clothes? And will I have time to explore the village for people-watching (because, hello, I’m in Italy)?

Driving through the gates of Lucia Magnani Health Clinic felt like arriving at a palace. The stately building stands at the center of the medieval village of Castrocaro Terme, about 80 kilometers southeast of Bologna.

Flanked by the Art Deco Grand Hotel Castrocaro on one side and the diagnostic center and thermal facilities on the other, the health and well-being complex exudes a sense of grandeur.

The moment I walked in, I felt an immediate connection. It was then and there, I decided to surrender to the experience. Greeted warmly by the front desk staff, the space feels healing as well as quintessentially Italian.

In Good Hands

Every guest here is paired with an “angel,” a personal concierge who ensures you know where to be and answers any questions. Most of the staff, from doctors to therapists, speak English. But just in case of a language issue, your angel makes sure nothing is lost in translation.

After checking in, my angel gave me the grand tour. The premises are way bigger than they look. And all I could think was, I’m so going to get lost!  We eventually made our way to the accommodations. My guest room was impressively spacious, boasting a nice-sized bed, a large wardrobe, a desk and an expansive view of a fortress, church and rolling hills. The bathroom was just as roomy, complete with a double sink, a large shower and plenty of toiletries. Several suites even come with a freestanding bathtub.

Folded neatly on the bed was an all-white branded “tracksuit” comprising a T-shirt, jogging pants and a zip-up jacket so everyone knows you’re a Long Life guest. You also get a fluffy robe, flip-flops and slippers for that extra touch of comfort.

Note to self for my next visit: don’t be a packrat.

Long Life Experience

At the helm of this award-winning wellness facility is Dr. Lucia Magnani, founder of the Long Life Formula method and CEO of Lucia Magnani Health Clinic. With her knowledge of biochemistry, extensive experience managing complex healthcare facilities and remarkable intuition, Dr. Magnani has become a true pioneer in anti-aging.

“Taking care of your body doesn’t only involve physical aspects,” says Dr. Magnani. “It is a process that requires a balance between physical health, mental well-being and a strong connection with your inner self. These are all fundamental elements for living a long, quality life.”

Her signature Long Life Formula is a groundbreaking scientific approach designed to slow aging, combat oxidative stress and boost overall health—with the added indulgence of pampering.

“The Long Life Formula is my life’s work and a precious gift that I want to share with those interested in taking stock of their health, wellness and beauty,” says Dr. Magnani. “What we offer at Lucia Magnani Health Clinic is a holistic experience designed to transform the lifestyle of our guests.”

Dr. Magnani remains deeply involved, overseeing the clinic’s philosophy and collaborating with GVM Care & Research, one of Europe’s leading healthcare groups. In addition, a team of 30 on-site medical professionals closely monitors each health, beauty and well-being treatment.

Reconnect to Your Health

The Long Life Formula unfolds in four meticulously crafted phases, beginning with medical check-ups at the clinic’s diagnostic center. From there, guests are “prescribed” a personalized wellness plan, aimed at reversing existing issues and restoring balance.

Here’s what the Long Life Formula entails:

  1. Comprehensive medical check-ups include everything from oxidative stress tests to blood chemistry analyses, gut microbiota examinations and specialist screenings.
  2. Nutritional consultation and subsequent personalized diet plan.
  3. Assessment of physical fitness, stress levels and targeted exercises.
  4. Tailored spa and cosmetic (or beauty) treatments based on the results of your health check-up.

The all-inclusive Long Life program is designed to educate guests, reprogram daily habits and show how small changes can lead to big transformations. Highlights include an oxidative stress analysis, cutting-edge medical check-ups, rejuvenating soaks in the thermal pool and detoxifying mud baths for the ultimate restorative experience.

Yoga also plays a major role in the program, with classes held in the Padiglione delle Feste (Party Pavilion), a 1930s Art Deco masterpiece. Led by a certified instructor, the sessions are personalized, with poses and flows tailored to the student’s needs.

I attended two classes, and each ended with a soothing sound bath that washed over me, calming my mind and body. I walked away feeling energized and relaxed, completely in awe of the experience.

Guests can choose from seven Long Life wellness pathways and four Long Life health pathways, ranging from 3, 7, 10 to 14 days, depending on how passionate they are to commit to such a life-enhancing experience.

Water Therapy Commandments

Castrocaro’s crown jewels are its unique green thermal waters and blue “velvet” mud—described by none other than Leonardo da Vinci as “azzurrigno terren di mare” or “blue sea land.” These natural wonders are the driving force behind Lucia Magnani Health Clinic’s innovative treatments and therapies.

Since I was at a thermal spa, it was only fitting that I met with a doctor specializing in thermal physiotherapy. He recommended daily water aerobics in the salso-bromo-iodic and sulfur-rich thermal water pool. The high mineral content gives the waters their therapeutic properties, offering a truly rejuvenating experience.

As you enter the thermal spa, you step into a subterranean world that opens to a large indoor/outdoor thermal pool. And let me tell you, there’s no better feeling than swimming outside, with steam rising from the warm water while the crisp air surrounds you. The facilities also feature a lavender-scented Roman bath, a Turkish bath, sensory showers, two saunas, an ice waterfall and a balance pool.

Get Muddy With It

Naturally, I couldn’t resist indulging in a mud treatment—though it was technically part of my thermal cure to detox and ease joint pain.

Lucia Magnani Health Clinic follows a centuries-old tradition of preparing its clay. After being extracted from the nearby hills, the mud is transferred to tanks in a historic mud factory, where it matures for six to nine months. By this time, the mud has a luscious, creamy texture that resembles gelato.

As I lay down on the treatment table, I felt a bit exposed while the technician applied the cool, clammy mud to my skin, carefully covering me before wrapping me snugly in a warm blanket. For the next 12 minutes, I felt the magic happen—a gentle osmotic process where the mud encouraged my body to sweat and release toxins.

Once the treatment was complete, I slipped into a thermal water bath for a soothing ten-minute soak, followed by a rinse in the thermal shower. The whole experience ended perfectly with warm linens to dry off, leaving me refreshed and detoxified.

Once Upon a Spa Time

Complementing medical check-ups and hydrotherapy, relaxation is central to the experience, with indulgent massages, facials and body treatments.

I was fortunate to experience a full-body exfoliation, a soothing California massage, a scalp massage, a hot stone massage and a rejuvenating facial.

Guests kick off their journey with a mint scrub exfoliation massage, where everything is tutto caldo (warm)— towels, thermal shower, cozy sheet wrap and lavender face oil. This pampering process opens pores and sweeps away dead skin cells, leaving you feeling impossibly soft.

As the day winds down, guests receive an early evening treatment before dinner to help set them up for restful sleep. No two massages are ever the same, with therapists tailoring each treatment to your unique physical and emotional state.

It might sound a bit mystical, but the therapists here have an uncanny ability to tune into exactly what your body needs. Their magical touch is nothing short of transformative, fixing whatever ails you with a sense of intuition that goes beyond the usual spa experience.

A special shout-out to the California Massage, created by the Esalen Institute. This standout therapy uses long, flowing strokes, a slow rhythm and deliberate pauses that bring you back to a state of balance and natural alignment. It’s the kind of massage where you reset from within.

And let’s not forget the skincare. Dr. Magnani and her research team have formulated a line of in-house products designed to tackle oxidative stress—an imbalance between free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them.

These formulations pack antioxidants and rejuvenating ingredients to nourish your skin and actively fight signs of aging. Trust me: after trying the products, you’ll want to take home the entire line.

Culinary Wellness

Finally, a cornerstone of the Long Life Formula is the curative power of food. It may have been wine o’clock somewhere, but not at Lucia Magnani Health Clinic. Wine isn’t part of the program here.

Instead, thanks to a collaboration with top nutritionists, each guest enjoys a personalized plan of five meals a day. Yes, you read that right—breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus two snacks!

Chefs thoughtfully craft meals using locally sourced, antioxidant-rich produce, preparing them with sous vide and low-temperature methods to align with Dr. Magnani’s Long Life Formula.

Did I want to sneak gelato during my afternoon stroll? Maybe. Did I crave a glass of Italian wine at dinner? Absolutely. Or what about a slice of bread to mop up the last of that tasty pasta sauce? You bet.

But honestly, I never felt like I was missing out. Every bite is seasoned perfectly, and the food is so flavorful that I didn’t notice what wasn’t on the table.

Il Dolce Far Tutto (the Sweetness of Doing Everything)

Spending time at a medical spa clinic lets you press pause and dive headfirst into a healthful journey—with nothing to pull you away. Looking back on my experience, three aspects stand out:

Habits: You never truly realize how set in your ways you are until you’re challenged to break free from them.
Trust: Trusting the process and the experts.
Sweet surrender: Letting go and fully embracing the experience, without resistance.

Wellness can sometimes look like a hot stone massage, a Vinyasa yoga class and a three-course meal with wine at a swanky spa. Other times, it’s about going all in at a spa clinic, where you work on yourself from the inside out—emerging more conscious, balanced and ready to conquer life.

These four days at Lucia Magnani Health Clinic didn’t just give my mind, body and soul what it needs—they gave it what it deserves. This was the spa getaway I didn’t know I was craving. Grazie mille
