Soothed. That’s the word that best describes how my tired muscles felt as the therapist at the Seventy Barcelona Spa massaged the organic and vegan orange blossom oil onto my skin,
After spending much of the work week on business in the Spanish city, I’d opted to move from my conference hotel to Seventy Barcelona for a few days of R&R. The property’s goal is to feel like a guest house that offers the conveniences of a luxury hotel.
And from the moment I arrived in the vibrantly colored, bookshelf-walled lobby of this Barcelona beauty, I can say that Seventy Barcelona did not disappoint.
Read on to learn why Seventy Barcelona should be on your to-visit list when you want a Spanish getaway that balances wellness with indulgence.
Location
I’ll be honest. Taxis, Ubers and transportation in general were difficult to come by during my visit to Barcelona. This was even more noticeable during the first part of my trip. My original hotel was located by the Fira Barcelona (where the conference was being held)—about a 20-minute car ride south of where sites like Sagrada Familia and the Port of Barcelona are located.
Seventy Barcelona is further north and is a prime location if you want to get your steps in while seeing the city. Plenty of shopping and eating options are just beyond the hotel’s doorstep.
Seventy Barcelona Spa
Vegan and organic spa luxury in the heart of Barcelona. Welcome to the spa at the Seventy Barcelona. The space is cozy-yet-chic, decorated with light woods and a celestial lighting scheme.
I started my visit with a dip in the pool (which features hydromassage jets). I followed this up with a steam room and sauna—with a visit in between to the ice fountain to cool off.
My treatment du jour was the Harmonic Ritual, which included a 30-minute facial and 25-minute upper body massage. When you’re trying to get the most bang for your buck, I enjoy a treatment that allows me to get a massage plus something else.
After several days of making the 20-30 minute walk to and from the Fira (with laptop in tow), the upper body massage was just what the doctor ordered. Plus, my perpetually dry skin soaked up every moment of the express facial. And in case you’re wondering, it’s the 100% natural and vegan SCENS product line that is what makes the spa vegan and organic.
Finally, if you’re looking for a gym-based workout. Don’t worry. The Seventy Barcelona has you covered. In the spa area, you’ll be treated to a full gym with state-of-the-art cardio equipment and weights to help you accomplish your goals.
Seventy Barcelona Accommodations
Understated elegance. When I walked into my spacious “Sky Room,” flooded with natural light and decorated in rich purples and bright whites, I felt right at home. FYI: these rooms get their name from being located on the highest floor of the hotel.
From the cloud-like bed to the Bluetooth sound system that reached from the bed to the bathroom, what I appreciated is that attention had been paid to every detail in the room. For example, every woman will appreciate that not only was there a quality hair dryer, but a straightening iron, too. Without having to request them, amenities included personal care products ranging from a tub of hand cream to a dental kit.
The minibar was well-appointed with a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments. And, of course, there was a tea kettle (my favorite) and Nespresso machine. Rooms are soundproof, so you can exist in whatever level of peace and quiet you desire. I also love that there was a cute little canvas tote in the closet for me to use if I had any Barcelona buys that didn’t fit in my suitcase.
Food and Drink
Garlic prawns. Truffle risotto. Avocado and spinach salad with mushrooms and bacon. Every dish I enjoyed during my visit to the Seventy Barcelona was delightful. I arrived at the property around lunch. And after a steady week of fried tapas and cured meat, I was ready to eat a vegetable or two.
The toasted bread with tomato and garlic was spot on, as was the avocado and spinach salad I’ve already mentioned. Paired with a glass of rosé, it was the perfect midday meal.
I highly recommend booking a room rate that includes breakfast. The fantastic spread includes everything your heart could desire ranging from eggs made-to-order to fresh pastries to meats/cheeses/veggies to a make-your-own mimosa table.
Oh, and if it’s warm, the patio is the perfect place to enjoy your first meal of the day. When it comes to dinner, I ended up eating at the Seventy Barcelona both nights of my stay.
The first night, I was with friends. We enjoyed a tapas-style meal where we shared the prawns and risotto mentioned above, as well as the roast chicken and wild mushroom croquettes. The second night, I surprised myself and ordered the fettuccini with parmesan. What can I say? It felt odd to order Italian in Spain! It was such a simple dish, but it was prepared to perfection.
Four Barcelona Sites to See
As I’ve mentioned, one of the reasons I tend to select a spa hotel is because of its location. After all, why spend time walking on a treadmill, if you can get your exercise and see all that a city has to offer?
With that said, here are four spots (all within walking distance of the Seventy Barcelona) that I visited during my stay. Keep in mind that a mile walk isn’t far for me!
1. Sagrada Familia
The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. It was designed by Antoni Gaudí, and more than 140 years after the laying of the cornerstone, it is still unfinished.
2. Parc de la Ciutadella
From the glorious fountain and the adorable lime green monk parakeets flitting among the trees, this park is an ideal spot to take a morning walk. Basically, it’s the Barcelona version of Central Park, complete with ponds perfect for paddle boating and plenty of walking paths.
3. Gothic Quarter
Wandering through these historic side streets, you’ll feel like you’re a world away from current-day Barcelona. I stumbled upon this “barrio” as I was making my way from the Port of Barcelona to the cathedral. Here you’ll find jewelry shops and other boutiques, and an excellent gastro bar: Le Bouchon. It was the perfect spot to rest my feet while sipping a glass of wine and enjoying a bite of patatas bravos and artichokes in olive oil with Iberian ham.
4. Cathedral of Barcelona
As with any of Europe’s grand cathedrals, Barcelona’s is not one to be missed. Much of the construction took place over 150 years, with the cloister finished in 1448. Then, additional work to the façade and on the two side towers was completed in the early 1900s.
