Living with celiac disease can make planning a vacation feel overwhelming. Will there be safe options to eat? Can I trust restaurants to take cross-contamination seriously? Will I spend my trip enjoying new experiences or battling stomach aches and stress?
After years of trial and error (not to mention a lot of research), I’ve uncovered seven gluten-free travel destinations where celiacs can enjoy their vacations without constantly worrying about their next meal. These places go beyond “safe dining.” They let you actually relax, indulge and enjoy the journey.
From gluten-free cruises to countries known for their exceptional celiac awareness, these seven destinations changed the way I think about travel.
Vacations no longer feel like a minefield of hidden gluten. They’ve become a chance to savor amazing gluten-free cuisine and discover cuisines I’d never find at home.
Here are some of the best gluten-free travel destinations every celiac should have on their list.
Gluten-Free Cruises
For the ultimate worry-free vacation experience, nothing beats a dedicated gluten-free cruise. Celiac Cruise has revolutionized cruise travel for people with celiac disease, offering specialized sailings where gluten-free dining is the standard.
Founded by Maureen Basye, whose family members are diagnosed with celiac disease, Celiac Cruise provides dedicated gluten-free dining rooms, exclusive events and a supportive community of fellow celiac travelers. The team creates completely safe dining experiences with dedicated kitchen spaces and trained chefs who understand cross-contamination protocols.
Passengers rave about being able to enjoy luxuries they’d long missed, like toast at breakfast and dinner rolls (items often impossible to find safely when traveling). Cruise schedules feature sailings to the Bahamas, Northern Europe and France, as well as special holiday cruises.
Celiac Cruise charters entire sailings or sections of cruises from partner lines, including AmaWaterways and Royal Caribbean, to guarantee a 100% gluten-free environment for their guests.
Prefer a traditional cruise line? Princess Cruises stands out with dedicated gluten-free kitchen spaces and specialized chefs, while Disney Cruises also offers excellent gluten-free accommodations with advance notice.

Italy
Italy holds a special place in my heart as a celiac traveler. This might seem counterintuitive in the land of pasta and pizza, but Italy’s approach to celiac disease is unparalleled. Italian law requires restaurants to offer gluten-free options, and the country’s National Health Service even provides gluten-free food allowances for diagnosed celiacs.
The Italian Celiac Association (AIC) has an extensive network of certified restaurants, hotels and food establishments that meet strict gluten-free standards. These “AIC-approved” venues display official certification, giving travelers confidence in their safety protocols. From Rome’s ancient streets to the romantic canals of Venice, I’ve never struggled to find delicious, safe gluten-free meals.
Italian pharmacies stock extensive ranges of gluten-free products, and major grocery chains have dedicated gluten-free sections. The country’s pasta companies, such as Barilla and Rummo, produce excellent gluten-free alternatives that are widely available. Most remarkably, the cultural understanding of celiac disease means restaurant staff are knowledgeable about cross-contamination and take dietary restrictions seriously.
Spain
Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s most celiac-friendly destinations, thanks to the efforts of the Spanish Celiac Association (FACE). The organization certifies restaurants and products across the country, creating a reliable network of safe dining options. When you see a FACE-approved establishment, you can feel confident that staff are trained and cross-contamination protocols are in place.
One of the most remarkable examples is the mountain town of Cangas del Narcea in Asturias. With about 7,000 residents—roughly 4% of whom are diagnosed with celiac disease—the town has gone above and beyond to adapt.
Bakeries, bars and cafés here serve gluten-free products as the norm, from fresh bread and muffins to tapas, cured meats and even beer. Cangas also hosts the annual Jornadas Cangas sin Gluten, a festival that attracts celiac travelers from across Spain for cultural activities and, of course, safe food experiences.
Further south, Córdoba is making waves as a city actively working to become a fully celiac-safe destination. Local authorities and celiac organizations are developing a strict approval process for restaurants, publishing detailed gluten-free food maps, and even creating a new mobile app to guide gluten-free travelers through the city’s dining scene.
Add to that several celiac-aware restaurants and a dedicated gluten-free bakery, and Córdoba is quickly becoming a standout stop for travelers with dietary restrictions.

Mexico
My experiences in Mexico completely changed my expectations for international gluten-free travel. Traditional Mexican cuisine is naturally celiac-friendly, built around corn rather than wheat. Corn tortillas, fresh salsas, grilled meats and rice-based dishes create a foundation of safe, flavorful meals.
Resort destinations such as Cancún, Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya have embraced gluten-free tourism. Many hotels offer dedicated gluten-free menus, and staff training regarding celiac disease has improved dramatically.
Local markets brim with naturally gluten-free ingredients, and the health-conscious dining scene has grown to include several dedicated gluten-free restaurants. And for drinks? You’re in luck: mezcal is always gluten-free, and tequila—so long as it’s 100% agave—is completely safe.
The key is knowing which dishes are traditionally safe and communicating clearly about celiac disease (“enfermedad celíaca”) and the need to avoid wheat (“sin trigo”), barley (“sin cebada”) and rye (“sin centeno”).
Gluten-Free All-Inclusive Resorts
Several resort chains now specialize in gluten-free accommodations, recognizing the growing demand for celiac-safe vacations. These properties train their culinary teams extensively and often maintain separate preparation areas to prevent cross-contamination.
Sandals and Beaches Resorts, scattered across the Caribbean, have developed comprehensive gluten-free programs. Guests meet with a Culinary Concierge on arrival, who helps review menus and coordinate safe meals across restaurants. Everything from gluten-free pancakes at breakfast to pasta and pizza at dinner can be arranged.
In Mexico, Grand Velas Resorts (with locations in Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit and Los Cabos) offer dedicated gluten-free menus, separate kitchen equipment, and staff training that make celiac dining stress-free. Similarly, properties like Barceló Maya Palace and El Dorado Royale in Riviera Maya provide allergy-friendly kitchens and menus, ensuring guests can dine safely in multiple on-site restaurants.
Even large family resorts like Beaches Turks & Caicos have gluten-free stations at buffets and train their teams in preventing cross-contact—perfect for parents traveling with kids who need reassurance at mealtimes.
When booking, it’s always best to contact resorts directly to discuss your celiac needs. The best establishments will ask detailed questions about your requirements and may even arrange pre-arrival consultations with their executive chefs.

Disney World
Disney World has set the gold standard for theme park gluten-free dining. Every Disney restaurant can accommodate gluten-free requests, with many offering dedicated gluten-free menus that mirror their regular offerings. From gluten-free Mickey waffles at character breakfasts to safe versions of beloved snacks like Dole Whips, Disney ensures celiac guests don’t miss out on any culinary magic.
Disney’s commitment extends beyond restaurants to quick-service locations throughout the parks. They maintain strict allergen protocols, and cast members receive extensive training about dietary restrictions. The Disney World website and mobile app clearly mark gluten-free options, making meal planning simple.
Book dining reservations 60 days in advance and note your celiac requirements. Disney’s chefs often come to your table to discuss preparation methods and ingredient sources, providing confidence in the safety of your meals.
Wellness & Yoga Retreats
The wellness tourism industry has embraced gluten-free dining as part of its holistic health approaches. Many yoga retreats, spa destinations and wellness resorts now offer gluten-free meal plans as standard, recognizing the connection between digestive health and overall well-being. Some even go above and beyond, creating fully gluten-free menus and training staff to understand the nuances of celiac disease.
Vida Asana in Costa Rica is one shining example. Nestled near Playa Hermosa, this eco-retreat serves an almost entirely gluten-free menu, crafted from scratch with organic, locally sourced ingredients. Meals feel nourishing, flavorful and safe, with staff who take dietary restrictions seriously. For celiac travelers, it’s rare to find a retreat where you can eat freely without second-guessing every bite.
In Bali, INTAAYA Retreat takes a holistic approach to nutrition, incorporating permaculture gardens and local farm produce into its menus. Gluten-free and vegan options are seamlessly integrated into daily meals, so you never feel like you’re missing out. Another Bali favorite, The Bodhi Leaf Wellness Resort, caters explicitly to gluten-free and dairy-free diets, offering customized retreat experiences with mindful, nourishing food.
Back in the U.S., Sagrada Wellness in California emphasizes clean eating through its “Sagrada Kitchen.” Their daily meals are prepared fresh with organic, seasonal produce, and gluten-free guests can expect thoughtful, flavorful dishes made in a safe environment.
When researching retreats, look for those that highlight “gluten-free” or “dietary accommodations” in their program descriptions, and don’t hesitate to contact them directly to confirm their level of understanding around celiac disease and cross-contamination.

Planning Your Gluten-Free Travel
Successful gluten-free travel requires preparation, but it shouldn’t limit your wanderlust. Here are a few essentials:
- Research destination-specific celiac organizations.
- Use the Find Me Gluten Free app to locate restaurants and read reviews (a lifesaver for me in Asia, where eating gluten-free can be harder).
- Carry gluten-free translation cards in the local language to explain your needs clearly.
- Pack emergency snacks like Lara Bars or Chomps for peace of mind.
- Consider travel insurance that covers medical needs.
The world is becoming increasingly accessible to celiac travelers. From dedicated gluten-free cruises to countries with exceptional awareness, incredible adventures await. Having celiac disease doesn’t mean sacrificing travel dreams; it just means discovering new and exciting ways to explore the world safely and deliciously.
Snapshot Summary
Celiac travelers can finally relax on vacation. Gluten-free travel destinations like Italy and Spain offer certified safe dining, while dedicated cruises eliminate meal anxiety entirely. Mexico’s corn-based cuisine provides naturally safe options, and all-inclusive resorts now train staff on cross-contamination. Disney World leads theme parks with extensive accommodations, and wellness retreats integrate celiac-friendly menus into holistic experiences. With proper planning—apps, translation cards, emergency snacks—celiacs can explore confidently without sacrificing adventure or flavor.
