In fact, this claim is one of the biggest reasons people have been flocking to this form of yoga. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike other types of yoga which can be self-guided or guided by a teacher, Yoga Nidra is almost always completely guided\u2014which helps to quiet the mind and body. It both rejuvenates, restores and relaxes the body by inviting it into a deeply relaxed state that\u2019s both conscious and unconscious.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a catch, though. You\u2019re not awake, but you&#8217;re also not asleep. Instead, you\u2019re floating somewhere in between.&nbsp;It begins by tapping into your awareness as you walk through three yogic steps: Pratyahara, Pranayama and Dharana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These pave the way for a deeper journey through the five Pancha Maya koshas. The journey begins with bringing attention to the physical body. It then moves to the subtle body and ends in a conscious sleep at your truest self. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ambujayoga.com\/blog\/what-are-the-koshas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ambuja Yoga<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\">,<\/a> these koshas are also part of the ancient text, <em>Taittiya Upanishad<\/em>. The koshas names and areas they target are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Annamaya kosha (physical body)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pranamaya kosha (energetic field)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manomaya kosha (mind)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vijnanamaya kosha (intuition and higher body)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anandamaya kosha (bliss)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While Yoga Nidra is a powerful tool for relaxation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6134749\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reducing anxiety<\/a>, it\u2019s not meditation. Often, these two practices are categorized as interchangeable since they heighten your awareness. This could be further from the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-is-yoga-nidra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> interviewed a yoga therapist, who states, \u201cThere are overlaps, but there also are key differences. With Yoga Nidra, you are lying down. The goal here is to move into a deep state of conscious awareness sleep, which is a deeper state of relaxation with awareness. This state involves moving from consciousness while awake to dreaming and then to not-dreaming while remaining awake\u2014going past the unconscious to the conscious.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>You&#8217;re not awake, but you&#8217;re also not asleep. Instead, you&#8217;re floating somewhere in between.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The therapist continues to explain one of the biggest differences is that Yoga Nidra is very structured and focused on reaching the delta state, while meditation is reaching the theta state.&nbsp;This delta state is reached by actively moving through each of the koshas, which invites you into a deeper state of rest to reach your true self. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoga Nidra is multi-layered and has techniques that offer self-exploration thus leading to clearness, peace and tranquility; whereas meditation involves the exploration of the concentrated state of Dharana and Dhyana.
