A cenote is created when the ceiling of an underground cave has collapsed. The term originated on the Yucatan Peninsula where cenotes were commonly used for water supplies by the ancient Maya and occasionally for sacrificial offerings.

The vast majority of the cenotes are located in the Yucatan Peninsula. In recent years, scientists discovered this area in Mexico to have a rather large and intricate underground river and cave system. It’s a huge area that spans the states of Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Researchers are still trying to work out how big it actually is.

Cenote formation is caused by the underlying bedrock sinking over many millions of years leaving the different shapes and sizes of the cenotes we see today.

There are generally three different types of cenotes depending on the rock and how it has eroded over the years.

Fully open sinkhole with water at the bottom

Half cave and half open-air

Closed cave cenotes that are completely underground

No two cenotes look the same. About 65 million years ago, the Yucatan Peninsula was an underwater coral reef covered by ocean. The reef grew and strengthened over millions of years until a meteorite hit and caused the Central American plates to shift. This event brought the reef to the surface for the first time.

Throughout Earth’s history, through the many ice ages, rising and shrinking sea levels and later acid rain, cenotes or holes in the limestone began to form. The holes exposed the massive underwater river system that was preserved since the beginning of its formation.

Much of the Yucatan Peninsula’s culture and history is attributed to the Maya. And it’s impossible to visit and not learn about their impact on this part of Mexico. The cenotes were extremely important to the Maya who believed that the cenotes were home to a god, named Chac Mool.

To please him, they made offerings inside the cenotes. These offerings ranged from semi-precious stones and pots to living sacrifices. This might be why archeologists have found bones at the bottom of cenotes.

Today, cenotes in Mexico are still sacred sites to the Mayan families that own them. So it’s important to preserve these and keep them clean.

Seven Best Cenotes in Mexico

The Yucatan Peninsula’s lush jungles are home to some of Mexico’s most unique natural features in the world. With well over 6,000 cenotes just in the Yucatan Peninsula alone, it’s impossible to list them all. There are probably hundreds yet to be discovered.

This also means that during your trip to the Yucatan Peninsula, you’ll never be too far away from one.
