The practice of yoga has been around for many centuries, especially in Eastern cultures. But over the past few decades, the number of individuals practicing yoga has grown tremendously.

1. Bikram Yoga

Bikram is a trademarked yoga style that was developed by yogi Bikram Choudhary. The yoga practice consists of 26 poses performed in the same way and the same sequence.

And this practice is performed in heated rooms to make you sweat. Heat and consistent sequencing are meant to invite a more meditative yoga experience

2. Iyengar Yoga

This yoga style involved highly precise movements with a focus on proper alignment. Blocks, blankets, straps and a variety of objects are used to facilitate these goals of movement.

Though less active, Iyengar is both physically and mentally challenging. Instructors are extensively trained making this ideal for those with injuries and chronic illnesses. 

3. Vinyasa Yoga

This yoga style is perhaps one of the most common in Western societies. With a focus on breathing, various postures are performed in a fluid manner from one to another.

Each Vinyasa practice varies from one to the next, which is perfect for those who do not like routines. And this yoga style tends to offer opportunities for physical, mental and meditative wellness. 

4. Ashtanga Yoga

This ancient form of yoga is rather similar to Vinyasa as it also focuses on breathing and movement. However, this yoga style is more rigid and structured offering the same consistent postures and sequence of movements.

Like Vinyasa, Ashtanga also is more physically active, which makes it likely you will experience a challenging workout. 

5. Restorative Yoga

If one needs to de-stress and rejuvenate, this yoga style is likely for you. Rather than being physically demanding or exerting, Restorative yoga is more passive in nature.

By assuming various postures with little effort, this yoga style tends to be more restful in nature. As a result, it is perfect for those who need to simply reenergize and reflect.

6. Anusara Yoga

Anusara is one of the more recent styles that has gained increasing popularity. The practice was developed in the late 1990s and includes its universal principles of alignment to guide movements.

This yoga style is physical in nature, focuses on core stability and spinal mobility with the intention to open the heart and one’s inner goodness.
